🏆Villa comeback knocks West Ham out of FA Cup; Wycombe upset Portsmouth

FA Cup third round action continued on Friday, with two games on the agenda. Here’s what happened.

Villa comeback prevents Potter debut win

scorer: Onan 71′, Rogers 76′; Package 9′

Aston Villa reached the fourth round of the FA Cup after coming from behind to beat West Ham 2-1 at home.

All eyes were initially on Hammers boss Graham Potter when he took charge for the first time. And once things got going, it didn’t take long for his team to score their first goal under the new management.

Crysencio Summerville carried the ball on the right wing and eventually found a free-standing Lucas Paquetá in the penalty area. The Brazilian took advantage of the time and space given to fire a shot past goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Unfortunately for the visitors, their chances of a second goal were wasted when striker Niclas Füllkrug was forced off with a thigh injury.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa struggled to threaten a comeback despite the efforts of Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and others as there were no shots on target within an hour.

But then Unai Emery’s men found their touch late in the game.

Amadou Onana reacted quickest in the penalty area and equalized from close range. Then, just five minutes later, the game turned.

Watkins received a through ball on the left side of the pitch, moved it into the box and picked out Rogers, who delivered when it mattered most to win the game.

Wycombe upset Portsmouth

Goal scorers: Hanlan 17′, Bradley 27′

League One side Wycombe Wanderers showed there is always a bit of magic in the FA Cup after beating Championship side Portsmouth 2-0.

Despite the visitors’ dominant possession, a laborious attack could only produce one shot on target over 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, two goals in the first half were enough to enable the hosts to advance to the fourth round.

Brandon Hanlan was the man who opened the scoring after taking advantage of a loose ball in the penalty area following Gideon Kodua’s rapid run.

The second goal came just ten minutes later when Sonny Bradley headed home from a free kick.

Looking ahead to the future of the FA Cup schedule, there will be a whopping 17 games on Saturday.
