1 person shot in post housing at Fort Eisenhower

FORT EISENHOWER, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Fort Eisenhower was placed on lockdown Saturday morning due to an active shooter, the post confirmed.

The Army installation posted on Facebook that “one person was shot in a shelter on post and later died.”

Officials say no information about the victim will be released until next of kin is notified.

The shooter is currently in custody and the Army Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an active investigation along with state and federal partners, officials said in the post on their Facebook page.

Postal officials say there is no threat to the community.

Officials say the incident appears to be an isolated incident.

“Fort Eisenhower is actively supporting the victim’s family and is available to anyone affected by this tragedy. “The safety of our residents and staff remains our primary concern,” the Facebook post said.

Congressman Rick Allen released a statement about the shooting Friday afternoon.

“My office and I are seeking further answers regarding today’s tragic events at Fort Eisenhower that resulted in heartbreaking deaths,” Allen said in the statement. “We will continue to monitor the situation and pray for the victim’s family and all those affected.”

According to postal officials, the incident occurred around 7:50 a.m

When the army announced the lockdown, it posted on Facebook around 9 a.m.:

LOCKDOWN! LOCKDOWN!

PERFORM LOCKING OPERATIONS ON THE INSTALLATION IMMEDIATELY! If you are in danger, take appropriate action!

The all-clear came around 9:45 a.m. after the post office had previously been blocked.

Around the same time, local law enforcement radioed officers to be on the lookout for a white Toyota Camry with Tennessee plates.

The radio message said the car was “last seen today near mile marker 145 on I-20 heading to South Carolina for a homicide at Fort Gordon.” Fort Gordon is the former name of Fort Eisenhower.

A fire engine and an ambulance were seen heading towards Gate 6, but it was unclear whether they were related.

The all-clear message on Facebook said:

The dangerous event is over. All staff can resume normal operations at this time.

The drama unfolded as the post office prepared to host an event commemorating the Army-Navy football game, which begins at 3 p.m

The post had scheduled the “Fort Eisenhower Army Navy Football Challenge” sometime after 9:45 a.m., with an opening ceremony, a JROTC Army-Navy flag football game, followed by a Fort Eisenhower Intramural Army-Navy flag football game and a picnic .

According to the post, these events have been canceled.
