Actually love is and remains an iconic Christmas film and became something very special thanks to the cast and crew on set.

However, not everyone knows that eleven cast members died in the 21 years after its release.

The legendary Christmas classic has graced our screens for years and it’s something of a tradition to watch it every year and cry, laugh and love all over again.

Actually love is a film that features a series of couples and expectant couples and follows their journeys through the holidays that ultimately end in love.

Audiences fell in love with those who graced their screens throughout the film and will be devastated to learn that some of these people are no longer with us.

Let’s take a look at who we loved and lost in the film…

Parkinson played himself as the popular television host who interviewed Bill Nighy’s character Billy Mack.

The presenter was known for his BBC career and was one of the original presenters Good morning, Great Britain before his death on August 16, 2023 after a short illness at the age of 88.

Jeanne Moreau

Moreau had a brief moment in the film as a taxi passenger at Marseille airport, which was not mentioned in the film.

She died at her home in Paris on July 31, 2017, aged 89, discovered by her maid.

Meg Wynn Owen

Owen got her role as Mary, the Prime Minister’s secretary in the film and we got to see her trying to look after Hugh Grant’s personal affairs in the film.

The actress suffered from dementia and died in June 2022 at the age of 82.

Sheila Allen

Allen played the role of Jamie’s (Collin Firth) mother in the film and was briefly seen by fans.

When Jamie decided to leave his family at Christmas to pursue his future fiancée, we saw Allen begging her son, “But, Jamie, darling!”

Allen tragically died in London on October 13, 2011, aged 78.

Rickman’s death shocked the television and film industry and likely caused people to stop hating his character Harry, who tried to cheat on his wife Karen with his office assistant.

Rickman was known for his decades of work on screen, including the Harry Potter franchise in which he played Professor Snape.

Unfortunately, Rickman suffered a mild stroke in 2015, which then led to his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, which was fatal.

Less than a year later, the actor died of cancer at the age of 69.

Gillian Barge

Barge played the cabinet minister in the film, and this would be her last film role ever.

As with Hall, Barge sadly passed away in 2003 after being diagnosed with cancer. She was 63.

Margery Mason

You’ll remember how Grant’s character was desperately trying to find out where Martine McCutcheon’s Natalie lived when he ended up on Harris Street, where an old lady answered and stamped who he was. Yes, that was Mason.

She was 90 at the time and retired from acting that same year before dying in 2014 at the astonishing age of 100.

Lynden David Hall

You’ll know Hall if you’ve heard his voice, as he was the man who was hired as a wedding singer for Kiera Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor’s characters and sang The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love.”

But the same year the film was released, Hall’s life was tragically cut short.

In October 2003, Hall was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and died on February 14, 2006, at the age of 31, as a result of complications from a stem cell transplant he received the year before.

Caroline John

In the film, John was Sam’s (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) grandmother, who we saw briefly on screen. Little did they know that John had already played the role of the Doctor’s companion alongside Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor in 1970.

Unfortunately, John would also be diagnosed with cancer and die in 2021 at the age of 71.

Edward Hardwicke

Hardwicke was young Sam’s grandfather and was known for his theater work.

Sadly, Hardwicke passed away from cancer in a hospice on May 16, 2011.
