2.6 million Stanley cups have been recalled after 38 people suffered burns due to faulty lids

Stanley recalled 2.6 million of its popular steel cups, citing concerns about loose lids that led to dozens of burns, officials said Thursday.

This action affects “all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the United States between June 2016 and this month,” according to a statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

These cups were often sold through Amazon and at Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Target, the agency said.

The recall affects 12- and 16-ounce switchback models as well as 12-, 16- and 20-ounce trigger-action cups, all of which were made in China. The cups in question retailed for between $20 and $50.

“At Stanley 1913, we are committed to continuous improvement and focused on creating quality products that are built for life,” the Seattle-based company said in a statement.

The company has received 91 reports, including 16 in the United States, that Target cup lids “came loose during use, resulting in 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two burn injuries in the United States, and 11 consumers worldwide requiring medical attention,” it said it’s the security commission.

Stanley urged customers to contact the company and arrange for replacement tops to be sent.

Stanley cups are an extremely popular drinking aid among millions of Americans who always want to have water or another beverage on hand.

Earlier this year, a woman was arrested in Northern California for allegedly stealing 65 Stanley stainless steel drinking cups worth nearly $2,500 from a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Roseville, officials said.
