3 takeaways from the Mavericks’ win in Utah

The Dallas Mavericks clinched the season series against the Utah Jazz on Saturday by defeating the Jazz 106-94 to avenge their loss from a few weeks earlier. Dallas has now won seven of its last eight games and has the fifth-best record in the highly competitive Western Conference.

Quentin Grimes started the game hot and Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford had strong fourth quarters as Dallas doubled their lead on Saturday night. Losing the ball sometimes costs them in the game, but scoring double-digit wins away from home is never easy.

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s win.

Quentin Grimes had a rough start to the season, averaging just 3.3 PPG in about 12 minutes per game before being eliminated against the Denver Nuggets. That seemed to have woken him up, as he played at least 20 minutes in every game and averaged 12.3 PPG, including back-to-back 20-point games. He was incredible in the first half against Utah and finished the game with a season-high 24 points. He has become a valuable member of the team’s rotation.

Dallas has committed at least 12 turnovers in each of its last 10 games, including 15 on Saturday night. They rank seventh-lowest in the NBA in turnovers per game, but they seem to pop up at inopportune times. The return of Luka Doncic would hopefully help, but he always averages three. or four turnovers per game. Many different players handle the ball, which can lead to a lot of variance, but Dallas needs to take better care of the ball.

The last time Dallas sat in the locker room at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, they were holding a team meeting after losing an embarrassing game following their fourth straight loss. They put everything on the table in this matchup and responded positively and have now won seven of their last eight games, including their return to Utah on Saturday night. They played much better basketball, mostly without Luka Doncic. This team still has another ceiling they can reach if Doncic returns, but they have played good basketball since their last game in Utah.
