3 winners, 3 losers from Michigan’s upset of No. 2 Ohio State

It happened! It actually happened. Michigan picked up its fourth straight win against Ohio State on the road in Columbus on Saturday afternoon. Despite entering the game as a double-digit underdog, Michigan held the Buckeyes to just 10 points and emerged victorious, 13-10. It’s a game that will go down as one of the greatest in Michigan football history.

After this gutsy win over the Buckeyes, I think the entire Michigan football team is a winner, but I have a format to fill out. Here are three winners and three losers after Michigan’s win over Ohio State.

Winner: Dominic Zvada

While hitting the game-winning field goal is one thing, starting a rivalry game is the real reason Zvada is our first-ever winner. It’s not easy to score field goals in The Game. Ask Jayden Fielding, who was just 1 of 3 that day (as Ryan Day mentioned, it was windy out there). Zvada may not be a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, but he is the best kicker in the country, major awards be damned!

Loser: turnovers

The Wolverines had several chances in the red zone that they missed. Davis Warren had a wide open Hogan Hansen in the end zone in the fourth quarter that was intercepted by Jack Sawyer. A pass so bad that I might no longer be invited to the game with my in-laws because of my reaction. Michigan also turned the ball over on downs after Kalel Mullings was stuffed at the line of scrimmage. Although it didn’t matter in the end, the Wolverines will need to improve in the coming seasons if they want to finish with fewer losses.

Winner: The Defense

Michigan’s defense was outstanding. Holding the Buckeyes to just 10 points is impressive, especially given the lack of depth in the secondary. The Wolverines forced two crucial turnovers and probably wouldn’t have gotten into the end zone if Aamir Hall hadn’t made his interception. Makari Paige also reminded Michigan fans that he still has playing ability. Paige also made a huge tackle on Will Howard to force a fourth down.

Although Michigan allowed Ohio State to move the ball late in the second quarter, it really contained the Buckeyes’ offense. Ohio State was 6 of 16 on third down and only managed 77 yards the entire game. Howard only threw for 175 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, which wasn’t nearly enough to win the game. Just for fun, compare that to Kyle McCord, who had 271 yards and finished with two touchdowns and two interceptions in last season’s loss to Michigan.

Loser: Donovan Edwards

For someone who has really made a name for himself in this rivalry, it’s hard to see a player like Donovan Edwards sidelined with an injury. Coming out of the game, he only had four carries for 11 yards and two catches for two yards. It’s a shame that he didn’t manage to say goodbye to the senior team in his last season. Luckily, we will always remember Edwards for his legendary touchdowns in Columbus in 2022.

Winner: Michigan’s running game

Despite the loss to Edwards, Michigan understood its task today – handing the ball to Mullings. He ran for 116 yards and a touchdown on 32 attempts, while Alex Orji also had 32 rushing yards. In every game since 2001, the team that runs the ball the most yards wins. That was true on Saturday, as Michigan finished with 172 yards on the ground while Ohio State had 77 yards on the ground.

Loser: Ryan Day

Ryan Day lost 4-1 to Michigan and still hasn’t fulfilled his promise to stay “Hang 100” against Michigan. That’s not a good look for a guy who took over a program that had gotten used to winning this rivalry year after year. When asked about the postgame fight this season, Day said only that his players would not allow Michigan to raise a flag on the field. Rivals like to say Michigan is the problem, but the Wolverines have endured multiple program losses without incident. Ohio State wasn’t ready to lose, let alone lose with class, and that’s on Day.
