4 injured, 2 arrested in shooting at Phoenix Sky Harbor on Christmas

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Four people were injured in a shooting and possible stabbing stemming from a fight in Terminal 4 at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on Christmas night.

Phoenix police and firefighters responded to reports of shots fired at a restaurant in Terminal 4 outside security around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday. Officers quickly arrived at the scene and found three people shot.

According to police, it started as a fight between three adults and two teenagers who knew each other. According to authorities, one of the adults then pulled out a gun and fired several shots, hitting a woman and a teenager who were involved in the altercation.

The injured teenager was armed with a knife and is said to have injured the armed man.

According to police, the woman was taken to a hospital and stabilized but remains in critical condition. The injured teenager is also hospitalized along with another man involved in the fight who suffered minor injuries.

Additional officers responded and detained the armed man and a young girl in the parking garage. The man was taken to hospital with at least one cut or stab wound and is also in stable condition.

Everyone involved in the incident has been located and identified. Police said no one has been arrested in connection with the altercation and a decision to file charges will be made once the investigation is complete.

The Terminal 4 security checkpoint and PHX Sky Train were temporarily closed during the investigation and have since reopened. Airport operations returned to normal on Thursday morning.

According to reports, 21-year-old Cole Elliott Nenon arrived at the airport two hours after the shooting and aggressively approached a Phoenix police officer.

Arizona’s family was on scene when a gunman arrived at the airport just two hours later after a relative told him about the shooting. Court documents identify the man as 21-year-old Cole Elliott Nenon.

“This man received a text message saying he believed there was an active shooter in Sky Harbor. This was not an active shooter. That never happened. And he arrived at the airport with firearms,” Sgt. Reeson said.

According to court documents, Nenon passed his weapons to other people at the airport before approaching an officer. An officer observed an airport operations employee holding a small weapon and a rifle and repeatedly asking police, “What should I do?” At that point, Nenon walked at a “very fast pace” toward the officer, who was in near the barrier to the crime scene.

Nenon reportedly held his hands out to the officer and said in a loud, aggressive voice, “Arrest me.” According to the documents, the officer asked him to step back when Nenon began raising his voice and repeating, “Kill me, kill me.”

According to court documents, Nenon began acting “angry” and yelling at the officer, who then forced him to the ground. During the scuffle, he allegedly spat at the officer and punched him in the face, knocking off his glasses. The video shows him trying to turn around and stand up as he was attacked with the help of a good Samaritan.

Authorities stressed that Nenon was not involved in the original shooting.

“It has nothing to do with this (shooting). He got into an altercation with a police officer. The officer was not injured, but an altercation occurred,” Reeson said. “Again, nothing related to the incident. No one was injured in this incident.”

Several officers arrested Nenon and he was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. Three firearms were seized.
