San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy reportedly suffered a nerve issue in his right elbow late in Monday’s 40-34 loss to the Detroit Lions and will undergo further testing on Tuesday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters.

He would not commit to Purdy playing in the Week 18 regular season finale against the Arizona Cardinals, leaving open the possibility that Purdy’s season is over.

Purdy provided his own update after the game:

Brock Purdy said initial tests on his UCL (elbow ligament) were fine, but his arm felt “on fire” after he was released, from behind. He said he would have an MRI tomorrow to get a better idea of the severity of the problem.

Since taking over as San Francisco’s starter for the 2022 season, Purdy has remained largely healthy. He left the NFC Championship Game this season due to a torn UCL, but returned at the start of the 2023 season, throwing for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 16 games and ultimately leading the Niners to the Super Bowl (he was) . rested in Week 18 and San Francisco secured the No. 1 overall pick).

He has also been largely healthy this season, although he missed the 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 12 because of right shoulder soreness.

Injuries and lack of production have been the prevailing storylines in San Francisco this year, with Brandon Aiyuk out this year and players like Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, Nick Bosa, Trent Williams and Deebo Samuel dealing with injuries throughout the season.

The Niners have gone just 6-10 this season, a far cry from the team that went 12-5 last season and lost in the Super Bowl.

Josh Dobbs replaced Purdy on the final drive of the game in San Francisco on Monday night and is also expected to start next week, although Kyle Allen is also a possibility.
