49ers Christian McCaffrey is going on IR and will likely miss at least six weeks with a PCL injury

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve after suffering a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee. McCaffrey left Buffalo after a 5-yard gain and was diagnosed with soreness on an 18-yard run. He was not used in the second half. McCaffrey had 53 yards on seven carries Sunday night and caught two passes for 14 yards before leaving. He played only his fourth game of the season after missing the first eight games due to Achilles tendonitis.

Christian McCaffrey will miss six weeks with a PCL injury

Kyle Shanahan announced that Christian McCaffrey will be out for six weeks and will be placed on injured reserve without surgery due to a PCL injury he suffered in the loss to the Buffalo Bills. This is a huge loss for the team as McCaffrey worked so hard to get back on the field and had not performed effectively until last night. At the end of the season, the 49ers have no choice but to cut him since he hasn’t performed well until last night.

He played college football for the Stanford Cardinal and was selected eighth overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2017 NFL Draft. As a sophomore in 2015, McCaffrey was named the AP College Football Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He holds the NCAA record for most all-purpose yards in a season with 3,864.
McCaffrey owns numerous franchise and NFL records, including being one of only three players to ever record 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, doing so in 2019. McCaffrey was traded to the 49ers in 2022 and a year later to the Named Offensive Player of the 49ers year after leading the league in scrimmage yards and touchdowns en route to a Super Bowl appearance LVIII had led. A member of the McCaffrey football family, he is the son of Ed and brother of Max, Dylan and Luke.

San Francisco faces a tough schedule with the Rams, Dolphins, Lions and Cardinals, but without it, only one winnable game – against the Bears – should be on the 49ers’ schedule. McCaffrey’s absence raises questions about whether other 49ers stars like Brock Purdy, Deebo Samuel and Nick Bosa will be available to play in January.
