49ers News: Charvarius Ward calls De’Vondre Campbell an ‘idiot’ for leaving the field

One of the strangest incidents occurred during Thursday’s game. San Francisco 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell refused to enter the game.

The return of Dre Greenlaw — objectively one of the best players on the team — meant someone would be missing out on snaps. The logical choice was Campbell, who had problems in coverage in the previous game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Greenlaw was great. He led the team in run stops in the first half. With a player coming off an Achilles tendon injury, you would have had no idea.

Greenlaw left the game as a precautionary measure. Shanahan confirmed that Greenlaw left the game due to Achilles tendon strain and a knee problem, but there was no concern about a possible tear. Shanahan said Dre was “incredible.”

Greenlaw told reporters: “If I was healthy, I would play another game tomorrow. I’m sore. I did a lot of plays. It’s expected. The knee hurts. Same side of the operation, so everything is probably tighter. We still have 10 days until the next game to regain freedom of movement and self-confidence.”

This is the player the 49ers put in the starting lineup.

After Greenlaw left, the 49ers tried to sub for Campbell in the third quarter, but Campbell went to the locker room and told the coaches he didn’t want to play. Shanahan said that was the first time a player told him he didn’t want to play.

Shanahan was upset and said, “We’ll figure something out” when asked if the 49ers would release Campbell. However, he doesn’t feel like he’s lost the locker room:

“I didn’t lose anyone. For someone who doesn’t want to play football, it’s easy. I think our team and I know how we feel about it, so I don’t think we need to talk about it anymore.”

Charvarius Ward, one of the most brutal and honest players on the team, believes Campbell will be fired:

“He is a professional. He’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed up. He could have told me that before the game. So I feel like that was some stupid thing he did. It definitely hurt the team. Because, you know, Dee (Winters) was out and we needed a linebacker. And I think Flan (Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles) was devastated too. So the fact that he does that is nonsense to me. He will probably be circumcised soon.”

In a team that has experienced incredible trauma, you turn away from it because you have lost your place to a better player. No decision has yet to be made for Campbell. You can’t have that on your roster. Not after what the 49ers went through.

George Kittle echoed a similar sentiment:

“I’ve never been around anyone who has done that and I hope I’m never around anyone who does it again.”

Just like Deommodore Lenoir:
