49ers vs. Rams 2nd quarter thread: Where are the points?

At the start of the game we got our first look at the San Francisco 49ers offense. Unsurprisingly, the first pass went to Deebo Samuel. It was an incomplete, followed by a 1-yard run by Isaac Guerendo and another incomplete run by George Kittle.

Dre Greenlaw made an impact on the second play by drawing a penalty on Rams left tackle Alaric Jackson. Greenlaw was aggressive and Jackson could do nothing but reach out and grab Greenlaw.

That penalty sent the Rams into a third-and-long in which Deommodore Lenoir nearly had an interception.

It didn’t take long for the 49ers to get going on the second drive as Brock Purdy passed to George Kittle for a 33-yard gain. But a friendly attack from Deebo Samuel and a third-down run that went nowhere ended a drive at midfield before the 49ers could make further progress.

Jake Moody’s 53-yard field goal gave San Francisco an early 3-0 lead.

The defense did its job in the second half. Well, mostly. Talanoa Hufanga read the play perfectly, but was unable to catch the pass with one hand.

The offense again ended with a three-pointer after a third-down pass to Kittle fell incomplete. It was another series that included a Deebo touch, but not one for Jauan Jennings. After Greenlaw made a few tackles, the offense got the ball back after another quick three-pointer.

This time Jennings was targeted. But a bad pass by Brock Purdy on 2nd-and-6 and a sack prevented another drive. How long could the defense hold off the Rams? We’re about to find out.

The 49ers got a brief scare when Fred Warner left the field. He returned a little later. The defense forced another three-pointer. The rain hit the Rams. Their timing routes in the passing game were off and on one play a ball went right through the hands of Kyren Williams.

It was the first time Rams head coach Sean McVay completed four drives without scoring a first down.
