5 Comedian Hoaxes Uncovered by Snopes, 2024 Edition

Here are five more comedian hoaxes from 2024 on this fact-checking site Snopes quickly put the kibosh on…

Steve Harvey is dead – again

Poor Steve Harvey. After four After spreading various death rumors in 2023, he continued to pass away in 2024 – at least according to cursory social media posts, YouTube videos, and even paid advertisements.

Snopes found that these paid links came from Chinese companies promoting Google Play downloads for questionable messaging apps. It’s safe to say that downloading Local News: Breaking & Latest is probably a stupid idea.

Luckily for Family feud fans, Snopes was convinced that Harvey was still with us by turning on the radio and listening to a live broadcast The Steve Harvey Morning Show. For a man who’s always dying, Harvey’s definitely keeping busy.

Chris Rock has won a $40 million lawsuit against Will Smith

The “news” that Rock beat Smith in court with 40 million smackers went viral in August. But the comedian not only couldn’t win a lawsuit, he never brought one. Rock didn’t even file a police report after the incident.

Snopes has a credible theory that the rumor is based on factual reports that Rock received $40 million from Netflix for two comedy specials. However, the deal was negotiated long before the 2022 Oscars.

CBS gave Jay Leno millions for a new “non-woke” talk show

It’s easy to see why comedy fans were confused by this June post — Leno always seems willing to rake in network money, even if it’s at the expense of colleagues like David Letterman or Conan O’Brien.

Facebook fans were looking forward to a new show. “Great, I hope it’s true,” wrote one enlightened user. “All the late nite shows are full of woke idiots, not worth watching unless you live in Mom’s basement!”

Snopes I had no trouble figuring this out since the post came from the SpaceX Fan Club, an account that clearly describes itself as satire.

Jimmy Kimmel quit his show after Trump’s re-election

Kimmel was a popular one Snopes topic in 2024. In addition to the rumor about the end of his show, According to online rumors, he lost $500 million in deals about his political jokes. The good people from the SpaceX Fan Club were also responsible for this. Apparently “lie” is what counts as a “joke” in the fan club.

As for the rumors that Kimmel would be leaving the airwaves altogether? This fake news was spread by SpaceX Mania, an account with a familiar-sounding name. It’s just another falsehood, er, satirical headline that was swallowed whole by unsuspecting social media users. As The New York Times reportedThrowing the word “satire” anywhere in the text has become a popular Facebook workaround for spreaders of fake news.

Jim Carrey wrote funny prison letters to Tupac

This one went viral on Reddit in May, but it’s a recycled piece of unsubstantiated folklore that’s been circulating since 2017. In 2024, there were also viral posts of Carrey and Tupac “clubbing” together – a picture that Snopes also labeled as a fake. (That’s Mickey Rourke’s body with Carrey’s head photoshopped.)

Over the years, multiple media outlets reported that Carrey refused to reveal the contents of his letters to Tupac. SnopesHowever, he cannot find the slightest evidence that he even wrote such letters. Neither Tupac nor Carrey ever mentioned that they wrote to each other. Snopes describes this as unfounded — The comedian can’t prove that not I write a few postcards, but there’s no reason to think he did it.
