5 Wolverines to know ahead of Alabama vs. Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl

For the second time this season, the Alabama Crimson Tide will face a Big Ten Conference opponent in the coming days when the program faces the Michigan Wolverines in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida.

Yes, after a dominant road win against the Wisconsin Badgers earlier this season, Alabama will face Michigan in the coming days against Michigan, already the second Big Ten team of the 2024 season. This will also be the second straight season that the Crimson Tide and Wolverines meet in the bowl game after facing each other in the College Football Playoff semifinals in the Rose Bowl last season.

However, the Wolverines, a Michigan team that went on to win the national championship, regressed this season, finishing the regular season unranked with a 7-5 overall record and a 5-4 record in Big Ten play. But make no mistake: The Wolverines have talent throughout the roster and are coming off a regular-season finale in which they upset the rival Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus.

So, ahead of the New Year’s Eve showdown in Tampa, let’s take a look at five Wolverines we should know about ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl, playing Alabama.

Kalel Mullings, running back

The Wolverines have two running backs who will make a significant impact in 2024, the first of which is graduate student Kalel Mullings. Michigan’s leading rusher, Mullings, is in the midst of a career year that includes 185 rushes for 948 yards and 12 touchdowns, while he has also caught six passes for 35 yards and returned three kickoffs for 74 yards.

Ernest Hausmann, linebacker

Michigan’s leading tackler this season, junior linebacker Ernest Hausmann, is arguably the name to know for the Wolverines’ defense heading into this game. The former Nebraska Cornhuskers transfer is enjoying a career year with the Wolverines, recording 82 tackles with seven TFL, two sacks, one interception and a team-high PD.

Jaishawn Barham, linebacker

The Wolverines also have another linebacker that Alabama fans need to know: Jaishawn Barham, also a junior. Barham, a transfer from the Maryland Terrapins, is Michigan’s second-leading tackler with 65 this season and has also recorded four TFL, one sack and two PD in one of the best years of his college career to date.

Josaiah Stewart, edge rusher

Michigan’s most productive pass rusher this season has been senior Josaiah Stewart, who is an edge rusher. Stewart currently leads the Wolverines with 13 TFL and 8.5 sacks on the year and has also racked up 33 total tackles.

Davis Warren, quarterback

Finally, the quarterback position has been a struggle at times for Michigan this season, with senior Davis Warren being the name that has seen the most action for the Wolverines in 2024. The senior likely isn’t a threat running the ball and has struggled with turnovers at times this season, completing 63.5% of passes with nine interceptions compared to just six touchdowns.
