The Commanders’ kicker shoots the game-winning field goal through the uprights and defeats the Buccaneers in the Wild Card round

This game will forever be known as the Washington Commanders’ “Divisional Doink” because Zane Gonzalez’s field goal to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 in the Wild Card round was slightly assisted by the goal post.

Jayden Daniels and the Commanders’ offense got the ball with 4:41 to play in the fourth quarter after the Bucs tied it with a field goal at 20 apiece, and were methodical with their push, knowing full well that burning the right amount of time could end in a game-winning field goal at the buzzer.

There were a few key plays on the drive to keep the game alive, including Daniels finding Dyami Brown, who scored the game’s first touchdown, for a 21-yarder on 3rd-and-6 to keep possession of the ball to own. Then, with 55 seconds left, Daniels ran four yards from the Tampa Bay 19-yard line on third-and-2, denying the chance to tie the game.

When Gonzalez made that kick from 37 yards out, it immediately went right, and every Bucs fan at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay hoped it wouldn’t split the uprights. But when the bell sounded on the right goal post, it was enough for the three points and the win to advance to the divisional round.

This is the first playoff win for Washington since 2005 and is the result of another gutsy performance from the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Daniels cemented his role as the team’s franchise quarterback with a great regular season, but he didn’t give in to playoff pressure on the road against a Bucs team that beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the same round on home soil a season ago.

Daniels, however, was calm and collected, going 24-of-35 for 268 yards with two touchdown passes, including one to Terry McLaurin that came with ease after the game’s defining moment.

The Bucs defense pulled off a fantastic four-and-goal stop to overwhelm the Commanders on downs at their own three-yard line. But just four plays later, Baker Mayfield botched what appeared to be a fake handoff to rookie receiver Jalen McMillan. The ball hit McMillan’s arm and landed on the ground.

It was the Commanders who rallied at Tampa Bay’s 11-yard line, and Daniels made the Bucs pay with a five-yard pass to McLaurin on fourth-and-2 to take the lead.

Unable to concede another trip into the red zone on the ensuing drive, the Bucs opted to kick a game-winning field goal on fourth-and-3 from Washington’s 14-yard line. But thanks to Daniels and his offense, they would never see the ball again.

Mayfield was just 15 of 18 for 185 yards with two touchdowns, while Bucky Irving managed 77 yards on 17 carries. Mike Evans had the team’s first touchdown of the day with seven catches for 92 yards.

Meanwhile, Brown and McLaurin each had 89 receiving yards on the night.

The Commanders will face a difficult task in the divisional round as they will travel to Detroit to face the No. 1 seed Lions, whose No. 6 seed is lower than that of the No. 4 seed Los Angeles Rams and the No. 5 seed Minnesota Vikings , who play the last wildcard game on Monday evening.
