Leslie Charleson, beloved General Hospital star, dies at 79

Leslie Charleson, the legendary actress best known for her portrayal of Monica Quartermaine about the long-running soap opera General Hospitaldied at the age of 79. Her death was announced by series executive producer Frank Valentini on General Hospital’s official Instagram page on Sunday, January 12.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague Leslie Charleson,” Valentini said in a statement. “Her enduring legacy spans nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone, and just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew. I will miss our daily conversations, her quick wit and her incredible presence on set. On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, my deepest condolences go out to their loved ones during this difficult time.”
Charleson began playing Monica Quartermaine in 1977, cementing her place in television history as one of General Hospital’s longest-serving cast members. Her captivating performances earned her four points Daytime Emmy nominations and the admiration of fans worldwide. For decades she played the role of Monica, a figure at the center of the legendary Quartermaine family.
Charleson was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1945 and showed a flair for acting from an early age. Her passion for acting grew throughout her childhood and high school years. She then studied theater at Bennett College in upstate New York and continued to hone her craft.
Charleson’s sister Kate, who died in 1996, also pursued an acting career, highlighting the artistic talent that ran in her family.
Beyond her on-screen performances, Charleson was remembered for her warm personality, quick humor and dedication to her craft. Her nearly five decades on General Hospital made her an integral part of the lives of soap opera fans and a valued member of the entertainment community.
