Australian Open Day 2 Predictions

Naomi Osaka vs. Caroline Garcia

Ilemona: This promises to be one of the standout games of the first round. Naomi Osaka was at her best before having to retire due to injury in the final in Auckland. Her fitness level will have a huge impact on the outcome of this game as the level she showed in Auckland will be unbeatable.

Prediction: Osaka in 2nd

Jordan: Osaka’s run to the final of the ASB Classic was a great start to the year. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw from the final due to injury and admitted before the tournament that her MRI scan did not go as well as hoped due to the problem. Garcia’s level is completely unpredictable, but her famous opponent’s physical problems give her a great chance of beating Osaka for the second year in a row in Melbourne.

Prediction: Garcia in 3rd

Andreas: This should be a fun popcorn match in the Rod Laver Arena. Garcia won the last game of both Australian Opens 6-4, 7-6 (2), but I would like Osaka to reverse the result this time. The two-time Australian Open champion looked good in Auckland before getting injured in the final and appeared to have put his injury worries behind him in the last week. Garcia has yet to play in 2025 as her ranking is almost outside the top 60.

Liudmila Samsonova vs. Kamila Rakhimova

Jordan: Samsonova hopes to get started at the Australian Open after an Ilemona: Liudmila Samsonova’s powerful serve and aggressive baseline game make her the favorite against Kamila Rakhimova. To remain competitive, Rakhimova must extend her rallies and disrupt Samsonova’s rhythm.

Prediction: Samsonova in 2

disappointing 2024 season. However, Rakhimova’s style has the potential to make things awkward for her. Samsonova often fails against opponents who focus on extending rallies, and that could happen here too.

Prediction: Rakhimova in 3

Andreas: Samsonova had to forfeit against Madison Keys in the semi-finals in Adelaide, which raised some doubts about this match. Rakhimova is 1-2 so far in 2025 and has often struggled to play her best against top-30 opponents. If Samsonova can stay healthy, she should reach the second round.

Prediction: Samsonova in 2

Sara Bejlek vs. Caroline Dolehide

Ilemona: Caroline Dolehide’s strong game makes her the favorite against Sara Bejlek, who relies more on consistency and field coverage. If Dolehide dictates with her serve and forehand, she should come out on top.

Prediction: Dolehide in 3

Jordan: Bejlek impressed in qualifying and made the peloton. Dolehide’s powerful forehand and athleticism are still better than Bejlek’s at his best. The American is convinced he can find enough of this level to win.

Prediction: Dolehide in 2

Andreas: Bejlek is still looking for his first Grand Slam win, currently 0-4 in the first round. Meanwhile, Dolehide didn’t play in 2025 and her form stagnated somewhat over the course of the season. Since Bejlek has qualified for the main draw and has the match play behind him, I’m choosing the underdog in a three-way game here.

Danka Kovinic vs Lulu Sun

Ilemona: Lulu Sun is the higher ranked of the two, but her late form doesn’t give her much of a lead over her opponent when it comes to chances of progressing here. I’ll be supporting Lulu Sun to turn things around and take the win, which could come down to a coin toss.

Forecast: Sun in 3

Jordan: Kovinic has reached the third round of the Australian Open and is entertaining at his best. However, the rapidly improving Sun is the favorite to win against the Montenegrin. Her impressive left-handed forehand should work particularly well against Kovinic.

Forecast: Sun in 2

Andreas: This is Sun’s second season on tour, where he had a major breakthrough at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. It has yet to win a game in 2025 and is on a four-game losing streak since August last year. Kovinic plays a type of counter-attacking tennis and will certainly look to force errors from a potentially inconsistent Sun. This is about the surprise.

Prediction: Kovinic in 3
