His opponent also limped and lost momentum after the second set.

After losing the first set, Djokovic raised his game in the second, but the 19-year-old Indian-American fought back and at one point the second set was 3-3. But then fatigue and exhaustion took hold of him and gave Djokovic a 6-3 victory in the second set.

The American youngster shocked Djokovic in the first set and secured the first-round showdown 6-4 at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Monday. The Serbian ace appeared out of form in the first set and the American capitalized on it. But Djokovic found his footing in the second set against America’s rising tennis sensation.

Basavareddy got a wildcard in Melbourne and a win would be huge for the youngster. Djokovic is aiming for a comeback, aiming for a record-equalling 11th title in Melbourne, a record-equalling 25th major title of his career overall.

Basavareddy’s parents came to San Francisco from Andhra Pradesh in 1999. He was born in California and trained in Bryan Smith’s coaching camp. Rajeev Ram is his mentor. At the junior level, he has the highest ranking of his career: No. 1. 3. Basavareddy has yet to play a full ATP Tour season and turned pro last year after qualifying for the Next Gen ATP Finals. He reached his first competitive final at the Fairfield Challenger in 2023 and also lost in the finals in 2024 at the Challenger events in Fairfield and Charleston.

He won his first Challenger title in California in October and also finished second in two other Challenger events. He then won his second trophy in Puerto Vallarta. Most recently he lost to Gael Monfils in the semifinals of the ASB Classic.
