Why style points mattered in the Hoosiers’ win over Purdue

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti told reporters he tried to avoid the College Football Playoff rankings chatter, but Saturday’s final score said otherwise.

The No. 10 Hoosiers (11-1; 8-1 Big Ten) won 66-0 over Purdue, marking the most lopsided wins in program history.

Indiana’s starters stayed in the game until the fourth quarter – longer than in a similar blowout win against Western Illinois – and Cignetti even called for a fake punt late in the third quarter for a 38-point lead.

“Of course, style considerations are important this time of year, right?” said Cignetti. “And style points are earned.”

The CFP committee uses these style points to separate the teams in the 12-team field. Committee Chairman Warde Manuel said this while speaking to reporters earlier this week about what separates Indiana and SMU, a fellow losing team with a weaker schedule.
