Bobby Wagner’s game-changing fumble recovery helps Commanders beat Buccaneers – Deseret News

In his 17th career playoff game, former Utah State linebacker Bobby Wagner made another game-winning play.

Wagner’s fourth-quarter fumble recovery – the only turnover of the game – led to Washington’s final touchdown against Tampa Bay and was a turning point as the Commanders won 23-20 and advanced to the divisional round.

Wagner recovered a fumbled turnover between Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Jalen McMillan on a sweep, giving Washington the ball at the Tampa Bay 13 with 11:56 to play.

“I just saw the ball on the ground and had to go get it,” Wagner told Melissa Stark during a postgame interview on NBC. “We needed a play and I just tried to make it happen.”

This came four plays after the Commanders, trailing 17-13, tried but failed to convert a four-and-goal at the Buccaneers 3.

The Commanders took advantage of their second chance to tie the score.

Four plays after the fumble recovery, Washington retook the lead at 20-17 when Jayden Daniels hit Terry McLaurin for a 5-yard touchdown on fourth-and-2 with 9:46 left.

While Tampa Bay responded with a field goal shot to tie the game with 4:41 to play, Daniels and the Commanders found a way to win.

Rookie sensation Daniels led a game-winning 51-yard field goal drive that took up the remainder of the game.

This included the quarterback converting a third-and-6 with a 21-yard pass into Tampa Bay territory early in the possession and then using his legs to convert a third-and-2 to extend the drive.

It set up Zane Gonzalez for a 37-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the game. The kick hit the right post and sent the Commanders into the NFC Divisional Round, where they will face the NFC’s top seed, the Detroit Lions.

Wagner had a big day, leading Washington with eight tackles, including five solo stops. In addition to the fumble recovery, he also recorded a half-sack and a QB rush.

Daniels threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns in his first playoff start, while also rushing for 36 yards to pace the Commanders’ offense.

“He came in humble, got the job done and had a lot of fun. It’s definitely fun to be able to play with him,” Wagner said of Daniels.

Wagner’s performance was the highlight of more than a dozen players with ties to Utah who took part in wild-card action on Sunday. Here’s a look at Utah’s performance in other games besides Wagner.
