Brooke Shields responds to criticism about her appearance

Brooke Shields can’t help but laugh at the beauty expectations forced upon her as she ages.

On Monday, January 13, the model-actress appeared on Good morning America and recalled a negative comment from someone on social media that she felt validated her decision to title her new book: Brooke Shields can’t get old.

“I did an Instagram Live the other day and one of the comments was, ‘I really wish you looked like you used to.’ And I thought, (laughs) “Really?” she said.

Lara Spencer was quick to say that she should avoid reading the comments because people can be so harsh online.

“I had to answer them, ‘They’re disrespecting you and you should confront them, right?'” said Shields, 59. “But I thought, ‘Boy, we’re all so out of touch with each other.’ We have to find joy in that.’”

During the show, Robin Roberts praised Shields for her positive outlook on aging, as well as her ability to focus on the present and future rather than the past.

“I think it’s important to do that at this time in a woman’s life,” Shields replied. “The beauty industry wants us to chase youth, we look at regrets – what if, what if.” And I think it’s important to understand where you’ve been, but I find it really gratifying to say, “I may not know where I’m going, but I’m here.” This is a different age than before. Yes, I want to look good and be healthy. I said, ‘I wish everything was a little higher and tighter.’ But at the same time, I deserve everything I have on my face.”

“I think it’s important to pat yourself on the back and say, ‘What do you want to do now?'” You’re no longer tied to biology in the same way,” she continued. “Women in their 40s, 50s and 60s have more opportunities…you just think, ‘We’re impressive and fabulous.'”

“Age is just a number,” Spencer said, admitting that while it’s a cliché, it’s never been truer. She said that being 60 is no longer the same as it used to be and that women at this age are young and vibrant.

“And we’re not evil!” Shields joked.
