Firefighters from Mexico will help fight the Eaton fire, Newsom says

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said firefighters from Mexico were en route Friday to help fight at least one of the fires ravaging the Los Angeles area.

He said those coming to help from Mexico will join more than 10,000 personnel already on the ground.

They wanted to help fight the Eaton Fire, where more than 2,800 soldiers were stationed.

“California is deeply grateful for President @ClaudiaShein’s support in combating the Los Angeles wildfires.” he wrote on Friday in a post on the social platform X.

The Arizona Republic reported that Sheinbaum said in a press conference Friday that Mexican officials had spoken with President Biden and Newsom about sending support to Los Angeles.

Firefighters from Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Idaho, Colorado and Texas have also joined the fight.

Eaton Fire at the latest

The firefighters made their first progress on Friday afternoon the Eaton Fire north of Pasadena, where more than 7,000 buildings burned. Officials said most evacuation orders for the area have been lifted.

The fire was first reported on Tuesday, January 7, near the Altadena and Midwick on-ramps just after 6:15 p.m. in Altadena. By midday Thursday the fire had reached the summit of Mt Wilson, but officials said Friday that no structures on Mt Wilson had been damaged.

Acres burned: 14,117

The deadly Eaton fire was 27% contained as of Sunday evening.

The death toll from the Eaton Fire in the Altadena and Pasadena areas rose to 16 on Monday.

Fires in California

Other fires still burning in the Los Angeles area Saturday include the Palisades, Kenneth, Lidia and Hurst fires.

Palisades: As of Monday morning, the fire has burned 23,700 acres and is 14% contained.

Kenneth: As of Monday morning, the fire has burned 1,052 acres and is 100% contained.

Hurst: As of Monday morning, the fire has burned 799 acres and is 76% contained.

Lydia: As of Monday morning, the fire has burned 395 acres and is 98% contained.

Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for all residents living in and around these fires.
