Live updates: Los Angeles wildfires, Santa Ana winds trigger warnings as fires burn in Palisades and Eaton

On January 12, smoke from a wildfire covers downtown Los Angeles as seen from the Encino Hills.

As wildfires continue to burn in Southern California, air quality warnings have been issued for parts of the region.

Widespread air quality levels in parts of Southern California are at moderate levels, or Level 2 out of 6, as winds eased over the weekend and containment increased on the Palisades, Eaton and Hurst fires.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued these warnings affecting Los Angeles, Long Beach and Santa Clarita.

If the fires worsen with expected increasing winds, air quality could decline and spread to more parts of Southern California, as winds can carry smoke miles away from the fire itself.

Schools that reopen Monday will be under an inclement weather plan that limits outdoor activities and athletics, and masks will be available for students and staff, the district said.

Health risks from the California wildfires

Health effects: According to Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, particles from wildfire smoke pose several short- and long-term health risks. People are already experiencing small particles entering their nasal passages, causing itchy eyes and a sore throat, Mahajan told CNN.

But the toxins from wildfire smoke can cause more serious problems — especially for children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with respiratory, heart or immune system problems.

The best way to avoid these health risks is to stay indoors as much as possible, he added. However, when people go outside, they should wear an N-95 or P100 mask to filter out the particles.
