So close, but so far away. I always hope for three, but hopes don’t always matter. SPARE left me with 246 remaining possible solutions and only one yellow box that I tried to juggle with ABOUT. I thought I’d at least grab one more vowel, but I still had four gray boxes and one yellow one. CANDY was a good third guess, leaving me with three green boxes and a yellow “C” and only one solution remaining: FANCY for the win!

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word “chic” comes from the Middle English word fantasywhich was borrowed from Old French fantasy. This in turn came from Latin fantasywhich means “imagination” and again comes from Greek fantasy (φαντασία), meaning “appearance, image or idea.” The Greek root phantazein (φαντάζειν) means “to make visible” or “to show”. Over time, “fancy” in English evolved into a term for imagination, a preference, or favor, and later into something ornate or elaborate.
