Cold temperatures will persist, followed by possible snow

No major snowstorms are forecast for Louisville this week, but temperatures in the single digits and teens will cool the city over the next few days.

The cold front will keep air temperatures below freezing through Wednesday, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service in Louisville. Rapid snowfall is also expected Tuesday, but data shows Indiana could see slightly more snow than Kentucky, meteorologist Mark Jarvis said Monday.

The wind chill will likely make Tuesday feel even colder, with wind chill values of up to 2 degrees expected during the day. The air temperature could be around 6 degrees on Tuesday night. Jarvis said single-digit wind chill values will continue Wednesday morning.

Some relief from wintry conditions could come as early as Thursday, when Louisville is expected to emerge from the icy conditions. According to the NWS forecast, the high temperature will be around 38 degrees on Thursday and could rise to over 40 degrees on Friday and Saturday.

There is no significant threat of snow in Louisville through Friday, according to the Climate Prediction Center, but the city and much of the country are at a “low risk” of heavy snow Saturday through Monday. Jarvis said the weather service’s precipitation models vary widely and it is difficult to predict how much snow will fall in the region.

“Some of the models show only rain for Louisville Friday night into Saturday, while others show rain and snow on the back side of the system,” Jarvis said.
