Savannah man badly beaten by fake Amazon workers, suspect still at large

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Stunning video has now been released of two men dressed as Amazon workers attacking a Savannah man in his home.

The man opened his front door expecting a package Saturday morning, but instead he was beaten by two men posing as Amazon employees, according to police.

These are startling shots that will embarrass anyone ordering online. WTOC spent the day speaking with neighbors about this horrific attack.

George “Dirk” Hardison opened his front door to what he believed were Amazon workers delivering a package that morning. Until they broke into his house and then attacked and beat him. The incident was caught on camera.

The 66-year-old Savannah man was beaten by a whisker around 8 a.m. Saturday morning and was taken to the hospital where 14 staples were rammed into his head.

Two men dressed as Amazon workers walked straight into a Price St. home, covering their faces, wearing signature blue and black jackets and even carrying a package. It’s unclear what exactly was in the box they brought with them. They also left with the same package.

According to the police report, the two men inside demanded money before hitting Hardison with some type of sledgehammer. The attack lasted almost eight minutes.

The two young men made off with just $80. Footage showed the two leaving with the same package they came with and the homeowner screaming for help.

Hardison screamed for neighbors, who showed up shortly afterward to find him covered in blood and with multiple head injuries.

The first man who rushed to Hardion’s aid told police, “He saw a black man wearing an Amazon jacket walking on E. Huntingdon Street toward E Broad St.”

According to that report, “Savannah police officers observed multiple lacerations on Mr. Hardison’s head as he sat in his own blood from his injuries.”

The police are still looking for these suspects. They describe the two men as younger black men with medium brown skin and in their 20s.

You will be charged with at least grievous bodily harm, grievous bodily harm and trespassing.

While Hardison is now recovering, the bar where he works – O’Connell’s Pub – has started a GoFundMe to support his recovery. As of 2 p.m. Monday, the total donated to his recovery is $4,500.

Another social media post via GoFundMe said: “The police are investigating this heinous crime, but in the meantime we show Dirk the love and support he deserves.”

WTOC has reached out to Mr. Hardison, but we are told he is still in the hospital recovering from that attack.

WTOC also reached out to Amazon.

In a statement, Amazon said: “Based on our internal investigation, we can confirm that these individuals did not make a scheduled delivery for Amazon. We regularly monitor the internet for unauthorized Amazon apparel and request that these items be removed when and where we can. People who deliver on behalf of Amazon do not routinely knock on doors or ask customers to sign for packages unless this has already been agreed upon.”

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding this crime should contact the Savannah Police Department directly.
