Perhaps suffering from a hangover from their mid-season sojourn in Saudi Arabia, which saw them knocked out of the Supercoppa by Inter Milan in the semi-finals, Atalanta were somewhat lucky to avoid defeat on their return to Italian soil.

Even Gian Piero Gasperini admitted La Dea were lucky on Saturday afternoon when mid-table hosts Udinese hit the woodwork twice in the first half.

That result left the Bergamaschi behind the top spot halfway through their Serie A campaign, but they still have a strong chance of winning their first-ever Scudetto.

Having previously registered 12 wins from 13 games, defeating both Napoli and AC Milan, Atalanta are now winless in three games as crucial weeks approach that could go a long way in deciding their fate.

Last season’s Europa League winners have a couple of Champions League games coming up later this month – the latter away to Barcelona – and before facing Bologna in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia, they face two strong league opponents.

Before hosting title rivals Napoli next weekend, Gasperini’s men will look to record a 15th consecutive Serie A game without defeat when they take on Juventus.

Meanwhile, Juve can travel to Bergamo after finishing the first half of their Serie A season unbeaten – still head coach Thiago Motta is under great pressure.

Days after losing to Milan in the Supercoppa semi-final, the Bianconeri coach was sent off in a derby draw against Torino in which he left his team stranded outside the top 4 in Italy.

The first Derby della Mole of the year ended with a special blow Kenan Yildiz was canceled out by a similarly spectacular equalizer from Toros Nikola Vlasic just before half time.

Juventus have now drawn five of their last six league games, continuing a trend that undermined the Turin club throughout 2024 – long before Motta was appointed.

While under other circumstances some of Tuesday’s spoils would be perfectly acceptable, Juve’s increasingly frustrated fan base will demand maximum points.

Motta’s men face Milan again next weekend before taking on Club Brugge in the Champions League and then visiting Napoli. So the next two weeks will certainly put them to the test.

We say: Atalanta BC 0-0 Juventus

Although both teams have plenty of attacking talent, it could be an intense tactical battle between Thiago Motta and Gian Piero Gasperini, who know each other well from their Genoa days.

Bergamo is where master meets apprentice and Gasp’s men look set to add to Motta’s frustration by playing out a narrow draw.
