Inexpensive chicken broth sold at Walmart has been recalled in 9 states

Just over 2,000 cases of chicken broth sold at Walmart have been recalled due to a packaging issue that could cause the product to spoil, a Walmart spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY Monday morning.

The product, family-sized 48-ounce cartons of high-quality chicken broth, are sold in aseptic paper cartons that “could compromise the sterility of the product and lead to spoilage,” according to an announcement on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

A total of 2,023 cases were recalled, the statement said.

The recalled products were sold in 242 stores in nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, Walmart said Monday morning.

“The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority,” Walmart said in a statement to USA TODAY. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all affected (products) from…select affected stores. We continue to work with the supplier to investigate.”

Who initiated the recall?

According to the recall notice posted online, the company that recalled the product is Tree House Foods Inc. of Oak Brook, British Columbia. The company issued the recall on December 11th.

Walmart said any customers who purchased the product should not consume it and throw it away. You can also request a full refund.
