Enzo Maresca reaction: Chelsea manager on wild draw against Bournemouth ‘We deserved a lot more’

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca shared his reaction to the wild 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Tuesday.

The Blues were 1-0 up in the first half thanks to Cole Palmer and were absolutely on the rise and should have been three or four points ahead.

Then Moises Caicedo missed a penalty, which Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo converted to make it 2-1 for Bournemouth.

In the 95th minute, Reece James scored a wonderful free kick to make it 2-2 and save Chelsea from a surprising defeat.

Below, see what Enzo Maresca had to say about more lost points for Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca reaction; Reece James reflects on the late equaliser

When asked by TNT Sports in the UK whether a draw was a fair result, Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca did not believe that was the case and said his team should have won the game.

“I do not believe that. I think we deserve a lot more. Especially the first half. “It’s a game that we could finish 2-0 or 3-0 in the first half because of the amount of shots and chances, but it’s football,” Maresca said. “The negative thing is that after conceding the goal we completely changed the way we played and slacked off a bit. This is something we need to improve. Overall, we absolutely deserved to win the game and unfortunately we didn’t win.”

When asked if Chelsea’s lack of clinical completion is costing them, Maresca admitted it continues to cost them and that they need to improve.

“The most important thing is to create opportunities. But we also have to be clinical. That has already happened in the last four or five games. “This has happened many times,” Maresca said. “Palace was the last away game, we were 1-0 up and created a lot of chances, we didn’t score a goal and in the end we conceded a goal. Tonight more or less the same thing happened. The only thing is that we never made any changes in the last game and never gave up even after conceding a goal. Tonight we lost after conceding the penalty. Things have changed a little, we’ve fallen back a little. This is something we need to improve.”

Maresca also believed Bournemouth were lucky to end the game with 11 players on the pitch after VAR asked referee Robert Jones to look at David Brooks pulling back Marc Cucurella, but there was only a yellow card.

“I think so too,” Maresca said. “This season it has happened not just once, but many times with some penalties, but hopefully we can have better luck in the future.”

Asked if we saw the best and worst of Chelsea in this game, Maresca largely agreed.

“The first half was great. The first half was incredible. We weren’t great in the second half,” Maresca said.

Reece James scored his first Chelsea goal in over two years to claim a late point as the Chelsea captain reflected on the moment and his return from injury.

“I knew the free kick was out of range, I felt like that side of the goal was open, I tried to finish it as best as I could,” James told TNT Sports. “There was a time when I was scoring quite often and I haven’t had that feeling for a long time due to injuries and setbacks. I’m happy to be back with the team, get back on the scoresheet and help the team get a point.”

Did he feel a draw was a fair result?

“I don’t. I think we had a few clear chances in the first half that we should have taken to maybe finish the game, but if you don’t take chances it can sometimes bite you in the backside.” said James: “I think it’s the same in all football around the world: if you have chances in a game and you don’t take them, it could come back and hurt you.”

Can Chelsea build some momentum by winning the late point?

“You can take positives from the game, falling behind and getting a point, but there’s also a negative about not taking the chances you should. “Mixed feelings,” James added.

He was also asked whether former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel had taken over as England manager and whether this late equalizer had reminded him of that.

“I worked under him, he knows my abilities. I just need to get a run of games back,” James said.
