Reece James: Chelsea defender shakes off ‘lonely and frustrating’ injury to score equaliser

James has suffered from knee and recurring hamstring problems in recent seasons.

Since being named Chelsea captain at the start of last season, he has started just eight top-flight games.

His previous league appearance was an eight-minute cameo against Arsenal in November, and his last goal was against AC Milan in October 2022.

On Saturday, the England international bounced back from his latest two-month setback by playing 45 minutes against Morecambe in the FA Cup.

After his playing time was over, he came on as a substitute in the 56th minute against Bournemouth and overall impressed against tricky winger Antoine Semenyo.

However, James had his biggest impact in front of goal on Tuesday.

Talisman Cole Palmer handed the free-kick to James, who rewarded his teammate’s faith by curling in from 20 yards out.

“Reece can compete with Cole when it comes to free kicks because he is very good,” said Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca. “We went for Reece and he scored and we are all happy because at least we got a point.”

According to former Premier League striker Glenn Murray, it was a goal that had “pace, power and a bit of momentum”.

“He deserves it, these moments are difficult for every player,” Maresca added.

“Now his goal is to stay fit until the end and he will help us with how we want to play.”
