Two Disney Channel stars deny dating speculation after PDA-packed video

Two Disney Channel alums surprised their fans with a video of themselves kissing – but now they insist the PDA was just a prank.

Former “Jessie” co-stars Josie Totah and Karan Brar took to social media on Monday, January 13, to let fans know that their seemingly rough start wasn’t the real deal.

Totah shared a TikTok video in which she laughs and repeats, “It was a joke,” several times. She captioned the clip with a video of her and Brar kissing. In the original video, Brar walked up behind Totah and put his arms around her before leaning in for a smooch.

“WE ARE TWO PLATONIC BEST FRIENDS DANCING A LITTLE TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN,” Totah captioned the post.

Brar, meanwhile, addressed the video on his Instagram story and wrote: “It was a joke 😭 I didn’t want to put any pressure on you all <3."

Despite Totah and Brar’s clarification, some fans are still not convinced that there is no romantic connection between the two.

“That did NOT look like a joke 😭😭,” one person commented on Totah’s TikTok video.

Others speculated that Brar looked particularly amorous.

“Baby this is a joke for YOU 😭😭 Karan loved this 😭,” one TikTok user wrote.

Another chimed in: “Does Karan Brar know (this is a joke)?” 😭.”

Even Totah and Brar’s “Jessie” alum Skai Jackson joked about her doubts.

“IDK BABESSS😂😭 yp,” she captioned the video.

Totah and Brar played Stuart Wooten and Ravi Ross, respectively, in the Disney Channel series Jessie, which aired from 2011 to 2015. Totah came out as transgender in a personal essay for Time in 2018.

“My pronouns are she, they and her. I identify as a woman, specifically a transgender woman. And my name is Josie Totah,” she wrote.

Totah recalled being labeled a “gay boy” throughout her acting career as people in the entertainment industry “continued to embrace her identity.”

“Numerous reporters have asked me in interviews what it feels like to be a young gay man. I was even featured this way before receiving an award from an LGBTQ+ rights organization,” she wrote. “I understand that they didn’t really know any better. I almost felt like I owed it to everyone to be that gay boy. But I never thought of myself that way.”

Since its release, Totah has continued to be active as an actor. She recently played Mabel Elmsworth in the AppleTV+ series “The Buccaneers” and Titi B in the NBC sitcom “Mr. Mayor.”

While her character on The Buccaneers had a lesbian relationship, Totah told People in March 2024 that she doesn’t limit herself to LGBTQ+ roles.

“I’m following the story. I am an actor. I want to work,” she said. “So it’s a combination of wanting to do a job but also wanting to nurture storytellers that I find fascinating and tell stories that I feel need to be told.”
