Why can I still use TikTok after the ban?

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act would make it illegal for app stores and web hosting services to distribute or serve TikTok.

ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based parent company, could sell the company to avoid the ban. President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to delay the ban until he takes office, but for now the deadline is January 19.

So what happens to users after this deadline? You won’t be able to download TikTok, but it’s unclear what happens if you already have the app. An expert told CBS News that users will most likely receive a black screen with the message “This service is not available in your country.”

However, other cybersecurity experts believe that while access will still be possible, the user experience will deteriorate over time as updates and security fixes are blocked for American users.

The other option would be a VPN. This stands for Virtual Private Network. The service creates a digital connection between your computer and a remote server from the VPN provider. They can be used to disguise your device’s location. Since this new law does not target users, experts say it will not be illegal to use a VPN to access TikTok. However, they warn that some free VPNs make money by selling user data. Therefore, inform yourself in advance.
