David Schwimmer says he once served divorce papers on Rod Stewart

Before “Friends,” David Schwimmer certainly had a few odd jobs.

In addition to working as a roller-skating waiter at Chicago’s famous retro diner Ed Debevic’s, Schwimmer also worked as a bailiff for his mother Arlene – a divorce attorney – as he recounted during his appearance on Monday’s episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

“I would be the guy to emerge from the bushes and serve you divorce papers,” Schwimmer told Colbert with a laugh.

Schwimmer joked that as an 18-year-old, he felt like James Bond getting tips on where to find people to hand out papers.

Unfortunately, he admitted, “I am not James Bond.”

But Schwimmer had a memorable serve, he said, and went on to reveal that he handed divorce papers to, of all people, rock star Rod Stewart.

“Thank God I haven’t met him since,” Schwimmer said this week. “I don’t even know if he knows. I don’t think he knows…”

Colbert joked, “he knows now” and hilariously advised Schwimmer to “change your curls, man.” He’s vengeful!”

Schwimmer didn’t specify which of Stewart’s two divorces he served him with the papers for, but if we do the math, it most likely involved Stewart’s 1984 split from his first wife, Alana Stewart, whom he married in 1979. Stewart was later married to model Rachel Hunter, active from 1990 to 2006, and married to his third wife, Penny Lancaster, since 2007.

Fortunately, Schwimmer found his footing in Hollywood as a successful actor. He currently stars in the Disney+ series Goosebumps: The Vanishing, but rose to fame playing the lovable paleontologist Ross Geller in Friends from 1994 to 2004.

Talk about a career pivot.
