Central Texas events honor Dr. King with food drives, performances and gatherings

Austin will gather on Monday, January 20th to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. with the annual MLK Community March.

The event begins at 9:30 a.m. with a rally at the State Capitol, followed by a march to Huston-Tillotson University.

Attendees can enjoy a lively festival at the university with local vendors, live music and food.

Attendees are encouraged to bring canned or non-perishable items to support the Central Texas Food Bank.

However, an Arctic cold front is expected to bring chilly and potentially dangerous conditions to the area.

The Austin Area Heritage Council, which is organizing the event, recommends checking its social media channels for updates before you go.

For those looking for further options, Dr. To honor King, there are several events happening throughout Central Texas:

  • Pease Park Conservancy MLK Day Food Drive: From noon to 5 p.m., Kingsbury Commons (1100 Kingsbury St.) will host a drive to collect food, diapers and historic products for local charities.
  • Austin Shakespeare MLK Happy Hour: Enjoy free appetizers and desserts while actor Marc Pouhé Dr. King’s inspiring words. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Gallery at Chez Zee (5406 Balcones Dr.).
  • San Marcos MLK Celebration and Walk: Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the day begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at the LBJ Crossroads Memorial, followed by a walk to the historic Courthouse Square and a reception at the Dunbar Recreation Center (801 MLK Dr.).
  • Georgetown MLK Day March and Program: The march begins at 12:00 p.m. at the Williamson County Courthouse, with participants gathering on the north side of the building at 11:45 a.m.
