“Today” co-host takes extended vacation, “family health issue” is serious

Sheinelle Jones is dealing with a “serious” family health matter and is taking an extended break from the “Today” show.

PEOPLE reports, citing sources, that Jones’ three children are not the problem.

“Sheinelle appreciates the support she has received from fans and viewers in her absence,” the source told PEOPLE. “She is especially grateful to her close-knit family and co-hosts of the ‘Today’ show for all their love during this sensitive time.”

Jones, 46, who first joined “Today” in 2014, has been off the show since Dec. 18, raising questions among viewers.

Jones thanked fans for their concern in a social media post on Wednesday.

“I am deeply grateful to everyone who reached out while I was away from the show,” she posted. “I would like to let you know that I am taking the time to address a family health matter.

“It’s not lost on me how lucky I am to have the support of not only my Today show family, but also all of you. Your kindness means so much to me. We’ll see each other soon.”
