It’s an eternal truism of parenting: No matter how cool you may be to the rest of the world, you will always be an idiot in the eyes of your children. Even if you are one of the greatest and most famous athletes in the world.

Tiger Woods returned to golf, so to speak, on Tuesday night as part of the new TGL Indoor Team Golf League. His performance wasn’t great – his team faltered – but perhaps worst of all was the blush Woods got from his son Charlie.

Woods chose to go with “Eye of the Tiger,” a song that was popular nearly 30 years before Charlie was born, and Charlie didn’t think much of that choice. A few minutes later, Woods flew over the green of the second hole and landed in the virtual water behind the hole, and Charlie couldn’t believe his eyes:

Later in the game, Kevin Kisner, one of Tiger’s TGL teammates who had struggled all night, joked that he wanted Charlie to sub for him. If Kisner has more nights like Tuesday, this joke could become a reality.

Tiger and Charlie are very close and have competed in the annual PNC Championship, a parent-child competition, for several years. The duo lost in a playoff last December, their highest result together to date.

Last year was apparently a significant moment in the father-son relationship: Charlie beat Tiger on the golf course for the first time.

“He beat me by nine holes,” Woods stated during the PNC Championship. “He hasn’t beaten me over 18 holes yet. That day is coming. I’m just going to extend it as long as I can.”

Woods’ return to a true outdoor golf course remains uncertain. After Tuesday night’s TGL event, he suggested that his physical health wasn’t the issue; his touch is.

“I ran all three laps at PNC, had a great time there, and walking is not the problem,” he said. “It’s because my game isn’t very good.”

Whenever Woods returns to the court, Charlie is sure to be nearby, either inside or outside the ropes, ready to cheer… and ready to deliver a brutally honest critique to his father, too.
