PHILADELPHIA – Tests on Karl-Anthony Towns’ thumb revealed more than a sprain.

The Knicks center, who was officially ruled out of Wednesday’s game against the 76ers, also has a bone chip in his thumb, The Post has learned.

The good news is that Towns, who injured his thumb in Monday’s loss to the Pistons, plans to play through the chip and that’s considered day-to-day.

He is expected to return once the swelling from the thumb sprain – which was the other diagnosis – subsides.

Surgery is not necessary or expected during or after the season.

“We’ll see where he’s at (on Thursday),” coach Tom Thibodeau said.

Jericho Sims started in place of Towns as he was sidelined in the three previous games earlier this season.

Sims was listed as questionable for Wednesday after missing Monday’s home loss to the Pistons due to lower back spasms.

The Knicks were also without former starting center Mitchell Robinson all season due to offseason ankle surgery.

Thibodeau said the team hopes he will be cleared to run at top speed and resume training later this month.

With Precious Achiuwa and rookie Ariel Hukporti the other available big men on the roster, the front office is looking to add reinforcements at the top before the Feb. 6 trade deadline in case Robinson isn’t healthy.

Towns has also missed games this season due to knee soreness.

The beleaguered Sixers were also without their top two centers, Joel Embiid (sprained left ankle) and Andre Drummond (toe), with the former NBA MVP sidelined for the sixth consecutive game since his last appearance on Jan. 4 against the Nets .

Embiid has only played in 13 of 39 games this season.

“I’m assuming it was in that game (against Brooklyn) or shortly after, I don’t know exactly when,” Philly coach Nick Nurse said. “Obviously his foot is still bothering him.”

Towns appeared to injure his hand on the backboard during a first-half drive Monday night, but finished the game with 26 points and 12 rebounds in 43 minutes of play.

The 7-footer is averaging 25.3 points and 13.9 rebounds per game in 38 appearances – the second-most in the NBA.

“Every player is different. This is the league we play in and there are a lot of changes night after night,” Thibodeau said. “There will be a better understanding that there will be changes.

“You go into a game and plan, okay, these guys have played the last four or five games and all of a sudden their lineup is completely different. So now you have to change. You also have to deal with your own team. Injuries happen, men get sick. That’s all part of it. And how quickly can you adapt? That is the challenge we all face.”
