Zim vs Pak 2024 – Zimbabwe and Pakistan have a chance to get their T20I houses in order

Zim vs Pak 2024 – Zimbabwe and Pakistan have a chance to get their T20I houses in order

The T20 World Cup is as far away as possible. Zimbabwe are yet to qualify, while the ODIs remain Pakistan’s main focus ahead of next year’s Champions Trophy, of which they are the official hosts. Therefore, the ODI series, which they finished 2-1, will have far greater significance for Pakistan than anything that happens in this T20I series in Bulawayo.
Zimbabwe will be looking to continue their T20I dominance in the sub-regional qualifier with an even more famous result this time, buoyed by their upset against Pakistan in the first ODI. They started their five-match T20I series against India with a win earlier this year and against a similarly adventurous Pakistan side they will fancy their chances of picking up a win or two.
Sikandar Raza leads the side in the absence of experienced players Sean Williams and Craig Ervine, while Wessly Madhevere, Wellington Masakadza and Ryan Burl return to the squad after their absence in the 50-over format. While the men’s team was taking on Pakistan in the ODI series, Madhevere scored a hundred for the Eagles in the third innings against the Rhinos in the Logan Cup. Since that sub-regional qualifier, neither team member has ever made a T20 appearance, but few will forget what happened in the two sides’ most recent – and perhaps most famous – T20I encounter.
Pakistan are currently unsure about their T20I squad, as per a late announcement on Friday that three players – Saim Ayub, Aamer Jamal and Abrar Ahmed – have been moved from the ODI squad to the T20I after impressive performances last week. Series can be recorded.
After Pakistan ruled out Babar Azam, Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi from the tour, white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan is also out for the T20Is with Salman Agha taking his place as captain. Ayub, who Pakistan originally called up to the international set-up based on his T20 abilities, has gradually become more useful to Pakistan in the longer formats, although his recall – he will start the first game – may put him on the path to becoming the Pakistani to become all-format opener.

However, the balance remains an intractable problem for Pakistan. They prevailed 3-0 in the three-match T20I series against Australia and were eliminated in the final two games after losing nine wickets in a seven-over contest in Brisbane. Since Pakistan decided against fielding an all-rounder in the first game, this problem continues, with a long tail in a team that has Irfan Khan at number 7. On Pakistan’s tours of Australia and Zimbabwe, he managed just 79 runs in six innings, a long way off, and Zimbabwe could sense that Pakistan’s lower middle order can be penetrated.

However, for Zimbabwe to give themselves the best chance, they still need to make significant improvements with the bat. They finished all three ODIs with subpar totals and the bowlers had to bail them out in the first game. No batsman looked the kind of touch that threatened to control an innings and wickets in clusters were a regular feature of the ODI series. The bowling they face will be a step up from anything they struggled with in the Logan Cup or the regional qualifier last month, and Pakistan have now realized that this is the most obvious weakness to exploit .

However, like the ODI series, both sides will ultimately put these three games behind them pretty quickly once they are over. But as the Bulawayo crowd has shown in the last three games, Queens Sports Club could be a very pleasant place to be in the next week or so.
