MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Danielle Collins faces home favorite Destanee Aiava on day five of the Australian Open, while Holger Rune and Beatriz Haddad Maia also aim for a place in the third round.

Danielle Collins will face the only Australian still in the draw, the Wild Card Destanee Aiavato secure a place in the third round. She was a finalist in Melbourne in 2022, where she lost to the home favorite Ashleigh Barty. Since then, she has failed to make it past the first round of every Grand Slam tournament she has entered.

Aiava is the only Australian still in the singles main draw. She beat the Belgian Greetings Minnen in the first round and remarkably turned the game around by a set, trailing 5-2 in the second set before winning an extraordinary tiebreak in the final set.

While all eyes are on Aiava, she will gain a lot of support from the crowd when she plays against a former runner-up. Collins’ aggressive play from the baseline will be important in this competition along with her powerful groundstrokes. Collins shouldn’t let the home crowd put him off and prevail in three tight sets against a highly motivated opponent.

Holger Rune will be looking to inch ever closer to week two as he eyes a spot in the third round of the draw. He has never made it past the first week of hard-court Grand Slams. Last year he suffered three first-round defeats in Brisbane, the US Open and Hangzhou. He won his first round game against the Zhizhen Zhang when he played his first five-set match in Australia.

Matteo Berrettini dropped the first set he played in the tournament but proved too strong for the Brit Cameron Norrielargely dominated the last two sentences. He served 32 aces and served strong without losing a game en route to the second round.

The Italian is playing a strong game on his way back to the top. His powerful and precise serve and slice backhand, along with his defensive game and quick footwork, are the strong weapons the Dane will face. It will be a riveting match for the John Cain Arena crowd and is expected to go the same way as the former Wimbledon finalist.

The quarterfinalist of the US Open, Beatriz Haddad Maia is confronted Erika Andreeva The winner advances to the third round of the Australian Open.
