An oil depot is burning in the Russian region of Voronezh

Editor’s note: This is a developing story and will be updated.

An oil storage facility in Russia’s Voronezh region caught fire after multiple drone strikes, regional governor Alexander Gusev said on January 15.

According to Gusev, no injuries were reported. The Kyiv Independent was unable to immediately verify the reports.

Voronezh is located about 465 kilometers (289 miles) south of Moscow.

The attack comes amid an increase in Ukraine’s drone operations against Russian energy infrastructure.

According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Ukraine carried out its “largest” attack on Russian military and industrial facilities within a radius of up to 1,100 kilometers during the night of January 14. The targets included chemical plants, refineries and ammunition depots at the Engels air base, a Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) source told the Kyiv Independent.

In response, Russia has continued its missile attacks on Ukraine’s already struggling energy grid. On January 15, explosions were reported in several Ukrainian oblasts. In Lviv Oblast, the city’s mayor Andriy Sadovyi said Russian forces had “attacked the energy infrastructure of our region and Ukraine.”

Later in the morning, Lviv Oblast officials said critical infrastructure facilities had been hit in two districts of the oblast, but added that there were no injuries.

Why Ukraine’s long-delayed missile production ambitions have not yet been realized

The Ukrainian government has aggressively touted new developments in missile construction in recent months. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the country would have built 100 of its own missiles by November 2024. He called for the production of 3,000 “cruise missiles or missile drones.”
