Why You Won’t Get a Supplemental Security Income Check in December

Millions of Supplemental Security Income recipients typically receive a payment at the start of each month, but that won’t be the case in December.

The SSI payment, worth up to $943 for an individual, is typically distributed to eligible recipients on the first day of each month.

However, beneficiaries will not receive their usual check on December 1st.

That’s because December 1st falls on a Sunday and SSI payments don’t occur over the weekend or a holiday.

Eligible recipients instead received two SSI checks in November. Beneficiaries received their initial December payment on Friday, November 29th, in addition to their November SSI check, which was received on the first of the month.

The same pattern occurred in August. This month, eligible retirees received two monthly payments because September 1 fell on a Sunday.

However, eligible applicants will continue to receive an SSI payment in December. This is because they receive the payment early in January. Because January 1, 2025 falls on a holiday, recipients will receive their payment for the first month of the new year on Tuesday, December 31.

SSI payments are made to people with debilitating disabilities that affect their income.

To meet the eligibility requirements, applicants must be at least partially blind or suffer from a “physical or mental illness” that significantly limits their daily activities for 12 months or longer or is likely to result in death.

Couples filing jointly can receive up to $1,415, and individuals who provide the SSI recipient with necessary care can receive up to $472.

SSI payments and regular Social Security benefits are not related. Anyone who receives Social Security benefits is not automatically entitled to SSI payments and vice versa.
