Liverpool vs Man City: Ederson was dropped by Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has responded to Manchester City’s six-game winning streak by dropping goalkeeper Ederson for Sunday’s Premier League game against Liverpool at Anfield, sources have told ESPN.

Reigning champions City were eight points behind leaders Liverpool before the game, having lost three Premier League games in a row.

City only ended a five-game losing streak with a 3-3 draw in the Champions League at home to Feyenoord on Wednesday. With just 15 minutes remaining, City were 3-0 up before a series of defensive errors led to Feyenoord securing a draw with three late goals.

And Brazil goalkeeper Ederson paid the price for his culpability in Feyenoord’s equalizer – Ederson raced out of his penalty area and missed the ball as he tried to clear – by being taken out of the game in favor of second-placed Stefan Ortega.

Defender Josko Gvardiol was also released by Guardiola, while central defender Rúben Dias returned to the team after a lengthy injury layoff.

Ederson, who was close to a move to the Saudi Pro League in the summer before deciding to stay at the Etihad, has been City’s regular first choice since his £35million move from Benfica in 2017.

But Ortega has now been favored ahead of the 31-year-old as Guardiola looks to get City’s faltering season back on track.
