Andrea Stella, the McLaren team boss, has his say:

Our overall result was dramatically affected by the penalty. He did a really good job on Oscar’s page. Important points for him that preserve a solid chance of winning the championship.

It is the driver’s responsibility to recognize that they are in a yellow sector.

At the same time, I find it special that the yellow flag was raised and then removed even though the situation on the track was the same. The rubble was the same. It was still on track.

Norris tells Sky Sports he “doesn’t know what I did wrong”.

Apparently I didn’t slow down at yellow. I’m not an idiot. If I had seen a yellow, I would have slowed down. The rule says you have to slow down when yellow, so it’s a fair penalty.

The team gave me a great car today, so I’m grateful to the team. Disappointed that I couldn’t have performed worse than today and given them the points they deserved. So I made the team’s job much more difficult than it needed to be. The team is doing a great job, but I let them down.

Verstappen after his victory:

It was a very good race. Of course the car was much better in qualifying yesterday and today the first stint was very, very fast. Lando and I were within 1.8 seconds of each other the whole time, pushing each other and it was a lot of fun out there.

This track has a lot of grip and this year the tires held up really well, so it was a lot of fun to really push. We were on the road for a very long time in the first stint. Afterwards there were a few safety car moments where you had to be careful, but you were very happy.

It’s been a while to be this competitive in the dry and I’m very proud of everyone on the team who was able to do it in a day. So you definitely deserve this win.

The grip on the hard tires is very low. You’ve just come out of the pits and they’re already cold and you can’t warm them up behind the safety car. In the last corner I tried something different because I had no grip at the back and was just struggling with traction at the end of the corner.

Things got a little tricky in Turn 1 (against Norris), but I think that’s great to see. And after that we drove to the end at a good pace and are very happy to have won here.

In the last three years we have always been pretty competitive there (Abu Dhabi) so I hope we can be competitive there again, but we will pay attention to details to try to optimize the car and hopefully we can be there again fight for a victory.

Leclerc on the race and Ferrari’s chances of winning the constructors’ championship:

I would have immediately signed a paper saying that after such a weekend at this track we would have finished second because the characteristics of our car were not well suited to this track.

We knew it would be a very difficult weekend compared to McLaren, but in the end we managed to take a point from them, so the fight will continue until the final race in Abu Dhabi next week.

It’s hard to say (how fast Ferrari will be). We are all very close. It’s going to be very tight, but it’s exciting. Everything is possible and we will give it our all.

In the constructors’ championship it’s down to the last minute. McLaren travels to Abu Dhabi with a 21 point lead over Ferrari.

  1. McLaren – 640

  2. Ferrari – 619

  3. Red Bull – 581

Piastri on the podium but the disappointing result for McLaren:

It was a tricky race. The cars at the front seemed to have a very similar pace and it was really difficult to get into DRS and then get far enough into DRS to overtake.

A few good moments with Charles out there and nice to finish on the podium, but not quite the result we were hoping for.

I’m not sure what Lando’s punishment was for, but apparently it was a pretty big punishment. It will be an exciting end to the year. Hopefully we can be strong, but we will have to do everything we can to seal the deal.

The track is one of the most fun of the year, so it was a fun race, but I didn’t like the result.

Russell, who was on pole, received a time penalty, but it did not affect his fourth place. Gasly manages to keep Sainz at bay in fifth place and Zhou finishes eighth, ending Sauber’s points drought.

Max Verstappen wins the Qatar Grand Prix!

No surprise! Verstappen led from the moment he overtook Russell right at the start. He read the race really well and with his ninth win this year he shows why he deservedly is champion this season.

Leclerc and Piastri secured the podium places in second and third.

Round 52/57: As Norris overtakes him, Tsunoda struggles with his tires. Alonso comes in sixth, close to Sainz. Verstappen is clearly in the lead, but there is a lot of competition behind him.

Round 51/57: Magnussen frustratingly races past Albon and moves up to ninth place. Norris overtakes Lawson and is now in 13th place. He is about three seconds faster than the cars in front of him, so he can still score a point in this race.

Round 49/57: Hamilton wants to park the car and retire for Mercedes in his penultimate race, but he is told no. Everything that went wrong for him in this race (and this weekend) happened. He is now in last place behind Norris.

Round 46/57: Because of the penalty, Norris is now in last place. Verstappen, Leclerc and Piastri are now the top three.

Hamilton now receives a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Round 44/57: Norris received a 10-stop-and-go penalty for the yellow flag incident, which he must serve within three laps. Seems a bit extreme, but I think it’s a security issue.

Round 43/57: Everyone is trying to get some heat in their tires. A less exciting start than the last as Verstappen races away. Norris is under a little pressure from Leclerc, but he pushes him out of bounds.

Round 42/57: Norris is now under official investigation because he did not slow down because of the yellow flags. That could be a time penalty. Hamilton tells his engineer that his car is “broken.”

The safety car is about to end.

Round 41/57: Pérez may actually not have been hit. Could be a hydraulic problem. We turn on the radio to get some insight, but he just curses. Fair enough.

Round 40/57: The safety car ends. Verstappen is under pressure and Norris is out, but the Red Bull driver can escape the wheel-to-wheel duel. Wow!

Pérez loses drive and is hit in turn 15. Hülkenberg is also out and… the safety car is out again. That didn’t last long.

Round 34/57: Bottas has just gone over the mirror and there are still no yellow flags. There is a lot of debris from the mirror on the straight and now both Hamilton and Sainz have punctures as a result. A catastrophe.

share

Round 32/57: So strange that they didn’t move the mirror. Only on the straight can someone overtake another.

share

Round 31/57: Norris asks what he should do about Verstappen and the only answer he gets is that he speaks louder. No answer to his question.

share

Round 30/57: We get two yellow flags in a row because someone lost a side mirror. It’s right there in the middle of the straight. I think it’s Albon’s. Still no word on a safety car so the marshals can come and get it.

Round 29/57: Russell tries to attack Alonso, but he immediately backs away. He just can’t reach the speed with his new tires.

share

Round 28/57: Alonso keeps Russell at bay while Magnussen comes into the pits. Hamilton now slides around and collapses, costing him some time as he remains in seventh place.

Round 27/57: Russell is waiting for his tires to warm up. Hamilton says his car is starting to spin and both Verstappen and Norris are somehow faster on the old tires.
