The return of Geno Smith is the main subplot of this week’s game. Smith has not played against the Jets at MetLife Stadium since his departure after the 2016 season.

The Jets’ 2013 second-round pick has reinvented himself over the last three years in Seattle and now returns as the NFL’s No. 2 passing yards with 3,035 yards.

“I have always had great love and respect for this organization,” Smith said. “Obviously the team that picked me gave me a chance from the start. Lots of great people there. Some people I was there with, many of them are gone now.

“As for the whole revenge thing, that doesn’t occur to me.”

The Jets defense didn’t have its best season. Gardner struggled and the unit gave up a game-winning drive to the Colts in the previous game. Reed had a strong season, but the Jets will need a better performance against Smith than they have shown recently.

“Man, that’s him, I don’t know what not to say about him, he’s got excellent mobility,” Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said of the Seattle quarterback. “He kills people with his feet sometimes, he has the ability to extend plays, he’s a lot more athletic than you think when he’s moving and he makes things happen off the platform. He can make every throw.”

Much of the Jets organization has its sights set on 2025 and the search for a new GM and coach is already underway.

It is up to the players and coaches to play these final six games.

I think the Jets will hold this gap until the fourth quarter when Geno Smith throws a game-winning touchdown.

Four defeats

Rejuvenated Rodgers: The bye week sparked much speculation about the future of Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and whether injuries have affected his play.

Rodgers, who turns 41 on Monday, said he wasn’t sure if he wanted to play in 2025, but if he did, the Jets would be his first choice.

As for his health, Rodgers was not on the injury report this week for the first time since Week 4. He has recovered from the hamstring, knee and ankle injuries that plagued him in October.

Rodgers has had a disappointing season but is still hoping to get something out of the last six weeks.

“I’m going to enjoy it,” Rodgers said. “Of course the future is uncertain for many of us, but yes, I am very proud of this game – when I step on the pitch, when I go to training. So I’ll be excited to get out there with the guys and get a strong result.”

Jumping Leonard: Geno Smith isn’t the only former Jets draft pick returning to MetLife Stadium this week.

Leonard Williams, the Jets’ first-round pick in 2015, returns to MetLife as a Seahawk. Williams spent his first 4¹/₂ seasons with the Jets and then played for the Giants at MetLife before being traded to Seattle last season.

Williams had a great game against the Cardinals last week with 2.5 sacks.

“He’s been a game-wrecker in this league for a long time, and when he gets going, he’s as impressive as it gets,” Jets passing game coordinator Todd Downing said. “So we have to have a plan for him. He plays at a high level and with a lot of energy and that certainly showed yesterday.”

Point of no return: The Jets spent part of the bye week examining the issues that have held them back this season.

One of the areas that needed improvement was the return game – both kickoffs and punts. They’ve gotten very little from returner Xavier Gipson this season and are trying to find ways to add more explosiveness.

“One thing is we need to be more physical,” special teams coordinator Brant Boyer said, “and I think we need to shoot with our hands a lot more, run with our feet, be a little meaner in our blocks.” and run our double teams and things like that, and then the returners have to hit the holes.”

The 11th hour: The Jets have repeatedly said, “No. 11” this week like Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the second-year receiver out of Ohio State who has exploded of late.

Smith-Njigba has become a focal point of the Seahawks offense in recent weeks and has had some monster games. He had 180 receiving yards and two touchdowns against the Rams three weeks ago and scored a touchdown against the Cardinals last week.

“NO. 11 has come alive especially in the last few games,” said Jets cornerback DJ Reed.
