George Pickens avoids big fine for post-game altercation with Browns DB

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens avoided any fines in his altercation with Cleveland Browns defenseman Greg Newsome on the final play of the team’s 24-19 loss last Thursday. Instead, Pickens and Newsome each received no fine for the melee, and the NFL review found no wrongdoing.

However, other Steelers were also fined, including Donte Jackson and Damontae Kazee, for being unnecessarily rough and wearing the helmet, respectively. Browns safety Grant Delpit was also fined for ripping Pickens’ mouthpiece off his helmet and throwing it into the stands.

Newsome called Pickens a “fake tough guy” following the game, while Pickens said “nothing happened at the game.” Pickens declined to comment during a news conference Friday.

The NFL never checked the game for suspensions, but found nothing that could even come close to a fine. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Pickens was the “point man” in the game, in other words, the play that would go up and reach the climax of the football, but Newsome forced him out of the end zone.

The Steelers and Browns meet in a rematch on December 8th at Acrisure Stadium. Both Pickens and Newsome have this game circled on their calendars.
