Cardinals face obstacle on trip to Minnesota

“The quarterback is playing phenomenal,” defensive coordinator Nick Rallis said. “There are guns everywhere. It’s a balanced offense with a good scheme and a quarterback that plays at a high level. There are a lot of challenges there, and whatever you want to try and take with you, it can be stressful in other places.

Rallis could potentially have some reinforcements available on Sunday with safety Jalen Thompson and rookie first-rounder Darius Robinson potentially making his debut.

While the Vikings offense has had some success, the defense stands out in the stats. Minnesota’s unit is the top-ranked defense against the run, allowing just 75 yards per game.

This came after the Cardinals put together one of their worst offensive performances of the season. In Kyler Murray’s 76 career starts, the Seattle game marked just the third time the unit went without a touchdown.

“We need to establish the run early to get the offense going,” running back James Conner said. “Aside from the noise, we have to perform so we can stay on the field and try to get into the red zone, get the ball into the end zone and put points on the board.”

Under defensive coordinator Brian Flores, the Vikings are among the best at obscuring schemes and confusing quarterbacks. This is one of the reasons why players like Jonathan Greenard have nine sacks this season and the Vikings are in the top five in the league at quarterback.

Given the difficult environment and the fact that both teams have playoff football on their minds, Gannon said Sunday’s game will come down to basics.

“The way we have to play is significantly different than last week because of the different defense and different scheme,” Gannon said. “Be there in the details and make sure we get the line of scrimmage and the running game gets going.”
