Despite the special teams implosion, the Seattle Seahawks are 21-16 against the New York Jets

Thanks to a historic play from Leonard Williams, the Seattle Seahawks were part of a comedy of errors at MetLife Stadium, somehow only entering the break trailing the New York Jets 21-16 despite a litany of special teams blunders.

Kick returners Dee Williams and Laviska Shenault delivered one of the worst special teams performances by an NFL team in recent memory. Both lost fumbles in the first half, Seattle’s kick coverage team allowed Kene Nwangwu a 99-yard touchdown, and Jason Myers had a point-after attempt blocked. One of the aforementioned fumbles set up a short touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Isaiah Davis, giving New York a 14-0 lead before the end of the first quarter.

However, the second of these unfortunate mistakes resulted in points for the Seahawks. Moments after Shenault spit out the football after a trip of his own and the Jets recovered, Rodgers didn’t see Williams drop back on a zone attack, and the veteran defender hauled in a pick and followed a caravan of blockers down the sideline to the 92-yard -Interception return for a touchdown, immediately cutting the score to 21-13.

Aside from Williams’ standout performance, Geno Smith erased an early 14-point deficit by rolling left and finding rookie tight end AJ Barner for a 12-yard touchdown to open the second quarter. The veteran quarterback completed nine of 16 passes for 87 yards, including two 25-yard completions to Jaxon Smith-Njigba that set up Barner’s touchdown.

While Ken Walker III couldn’t go unnoticed in the first half with just 16 rushing yards on seven carries, Zach Charbonnet managed 18 yards on two runs, giving Seattle some balance on offense.

The Seahawks were able to get three extra points in the final five minutes when Rodgers’ fourth-down pass attempt at midfield to Davante Adams wasn’t intercepted off the ground. Myers benefited from an excellent starting position in the field and, in a rare positive special teams play, shot a 54-yard field goal just over the crossbar to reduce the deficit to five.

In the half, both Seattle and New York converted just three of seven third-down opportunities, including a misfire by Rodgers on a potential touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson, and neither offense topped 160 total yards in the half. However, despite outstanding play from both defenses, special teams errors and Rodgers’ pick six made the first 30 minutes a surprisingly high-scoring affair.

In addition to his interception return, Leonard Williams also took a point off the field early when he blocked point after point after Rodgers’ first touchdown pass to Davante Adams. Unfortunately, the Jets were able to get that point back by converting a two-point conversion with a Breece Hall run on the next drive after Dee Williams’ lost fumble on special teams.
