Jabrill Peppers is back on the field for the New England Patriots. But it doesn’t look like he will do so as captain.

The veteran safety was active in Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, his first appearance on the field since being removed from the Commissioner’s Exempt List.

But there was something missing from the Peppers’ jersey: the “C” patch that marked him as captain. Other team captains – like Hunter Henry, Kyle Dugger Deatrich Wise, Jacoby Brissett and Joe Cardona – wore their patches as usual.

Peppers was one of six players named team captain in September, marking the first time he was named captain in New England.

Since reinstating the veteran safety, the Patriots have remained tight-lipped about his status and his return to the locker room.

Earlier this week, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo was asked if Peppers addressed the team upon his return.

“I want to keep private conversations private,” Mayo said. “Look, he has a good relationship with everyone in this organization. We just keep all that stuff in the house.”

Mayo was also asked if Peppers’ status as captain had changed. The coach declined to answer.

“We will also have this conversation in the House,” he said.

Peppers has been absent from the Patriots since he was charged with multiple felonies following a domestic dispute at his home two months ago. The veteran safety was placed on the Commissioner’s Exempt List and missed a total of seven games.
