Azeez Al-Shaair of the Texans was ejected after hitting Trevor Lawrence of the Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A late hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence by Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair sparked two scuffles between the teams and resulted in Al-Shaair and Jaguars cornerback, Jarrian Jones, were ejected.

Lawrence lay on the field for several minutes before he was finally carried away on a cart – he was sitting in the front – and the Jaguars ruled him out for the rest of the game with a concussion.

Lawrence was not taken to a hospital.

Al-Shair hit Lawrence in the head after the quarterback slipped at the end of a 6-yard scramble late in the first half. Jaguars tight end Evan Engram shoved Al-Shaair in the back in retaliation, sparking the first fight between the teams.

The fight happened just a few feet away from Lawrence, who was lying on his back. An official knelt to protect Lawrence as the skirmish moved toward the Jaguars’ sideline.

The officials announced that Al-Shair and Jones, who came from the sideline, were sent off and given personal foul penalties. Engram was also assessed a personal foul penalty.

Moments later, things got heated again as Al-Shair and Jaguars right guard Brandon Scherff exchanged words while Al-Shair was escorted off the field. Al-Shaair ripped off his helmet and attempted to pursue Scherff, but was held back by Texans teammates Henry To’oTo’o and Joe Mixon.

It is not the first time that Al-Shair has gotten into a fight. He hit running back Roschon Johnson on the sideline during the Texans’ Week 2 win over the Chicago Bears. This came after he questionably hit Caleb Williams as the quarterback sprinted toward the sideline.

Al-Shair was fined $11,817 for the hit.
