Brooklyn Nets vs. Orlando Magic Preview: Matinee at Barclays

So it seems we’ve found the Brooklyn Nets’ kryptonite after all. After an improbable three-game winning streak on the West Coast, the Nets came home to face a resurgent Orlando Magic team. Orlando proved to be far too much for the Nets as Brooklyn lost by 23 points on Friday night.

Where can you watch the game?

YES network on TV. WFAN on the radio. Brunch and basketball, so we start after 3:30 pm ET.

Injuries

No Cam Thomas, Bojan Bogdanovic, Noah Clowney, Dorian Finney-Smith Day’ron Sharpe or Jaylen Martin. Dennis Schroder, who missed Friday night’s game for personal reasons, is not on the injury report, so you can assume he is available.

Paolo Banchero and Gary Harris are out.

The game

Orlando won the first and second meetings. These teams complete the season series at the end of December.

When that’s complete, the Nets hit the road while the Magic stay in New York. The Nets have a game against the Bulls tomorrow night, while the Magic travel to MSG to secure a spot in the NBA Cup semifinals against the New York Knicks.

With Thomas out, Cam Johnson has a role on offense. With the return of Dennis Schroder, CJ can serve as the number two offensive lineman instead of the number one. He made just 10 field goal attempts in 29 minutes, but that can’t happen again if the Nets want to get back to the winner’s circle. We know how dynamic Johnson is as a shooter, so his ability to drive to the basket and finish at the rim is even more important

A lot more of that will be needed if the Nets want to pull off an upset.

If you see a team playing two games in a row, try not to overreact to the first meeting. Your strategy is your strategy and you must execute it to win. The Nets need to fix their turnover problems. They scored a season-high 20, with Orlando scoring 34 points off those turnovers

Against such a good team you have to be a lot cleaner.

The ball always beats the defender and we can see that clearly here

That’s the good thing. If you are missing one of your top scorers, it will take a team effort to make up for the loss.

It also doesn’t hurt to have one of the brightest young stars in the world by your side. Franz Wagner delivered another all-star performance, running the show with 29/8/8/2/1 in 35 minutes. You need stars to compete, and Wagner is someone who gets better every game.

Player to Watch: Jalen Suggs

Who doesn’t love a nice dose of antics to go along with their basketball?!

One thing about the Nets is that they will punch you in the face.

Suggs also get in your face. He is the lead dog of one of the stingiest defenses in the league. Orlando is allowing 105 points per 100 possessions, the third-lowest in the NBA to date. They also allow the fewest three-pointers in the league, and wouldn’t you know it? The Nets hit a season low with 29 three-pointers on Friday night! With Suggs out there, it will be more difficult for the Nets to get into their offense and have good opportunities on the perimeter.

Assuming Simmons is out there, the Nets will need him to keep the offense going. The Nets are missing their starting backcourt and Ben will need to take on more playmaking duties to make up for Schroder’s absence. Ben still has tremendous vision on the pitch and knows how to set up his teammates. And Ben isn’t one to shy away from a fight, which everyone appreciates.

From the safe

It was announced late Saturday evening that Lou Carnesecca, the St. John’s men’s basketball legend and former New York Nets coach, has died at the age of 99. Carnesecca was an institution in New York basketball and the impact he had on the game is immeasurable. With that in mind, let’s go back to 1985 and the famous “Sweater Game” between the Johnnies and the Georgetown Hoyas!
