4 players the Jets should give more playing time for the remainder of 2024

As the New York Jets navigate the second half of another disappointing season, they could take the time to evaluate players for potential role spots on the 2025 roster, although there will most likely be a new general manager and head coach.

While there is a good young core to work with, including running back Breece Hall, receiver Garrett Wilson and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, there are also players on the roster that we haven’t seen enough of to make a final judgment to decide on their role in the next season.

Here are four players whose place on the New York Jets’ 2025 roster is still out:

Jeremy Ruckert

USAT

The former Ohio State tight end was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. During that offseason, the team signed unrestricted free agents Tyler Conklin and CJ Uzomah to contracts that buried Ruckert on the depth chart before the start of training camp.

Ruckert has 35 receptions for 232 yards and no touchdowns in three seasons, which isn’t exactly a large sample size to determine whether he’s part of the future. While many see Ruckert as a failure, it feels more like an incompletion. He hasn’t been given many opportunities, and with Conklin expected to be a free agent after this season, Ruckert should get a chance to see if he can become the team’s starting tight end in 2025.

Allen was drafted at the end of the fourth round of the last draft to add a different element to the Jets’ running game to complement Breece Hall. In his rookie season, he averaged just over six carries per game and two touchdowns, and the former Wisconsin defensive lineman only has two games with ten or more carries.

Hall will remain a focal point of attack next season. However, Allen should be given more work, particularly near the goal line, to showcase his powerful running style and give the Jets another reliable weapon that a new coaching staff can utilize.

Malachi Corley

Corley’s rookie season was, to put it nicely, unforgettable. He has only been active for five games and has two receptions on three targets, which is an odd usage for a player the Jets selected in the 2024 draft. Corley is not without his faults either. His first touchdown as a Jet was ruled a touchback after he inexplicably dropped the ball before crossing the goal line.

Jets offensive coordinator Todd Downing cited the “embarrassment of riches” at wide receiver as the reason Corley hasn’t been on the field this season. But good coordinators find a way to take advantage of a receiver’s strengths and incorporate them into the game plan. Corley has plenty of talent that you hope isn’t wasted on the sidelines the rest of the year

Izzy Abanikanda

USAT

Most people thought Abanikanda was all but gone after the Jets selected Allen and Isaiah Davis in consecutive rounds of the 2024 draft. But surprisingly, the Jets decided to keep four running backs and Abanikanda made the final roster.

However, Izzy has been used sporadically since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. In two seasons with the Jets, Abanikanda has 22 carries for 70 yards to go and seven receptions for 43 yards in six games, and that was in his rookie year. He has yet to play a down in 2024.

It’s hard to understand why the Jets kept Izzy on the roster if they had no intention of using him, even on special teams. There’s no reason you can’t alternate Abanikanda with Isaiah Davis every week to give him some playing time on offense.
